Hair Transplant

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of hair follicles from one part of the body, usually the back or sides of the scalp (donor site), and transplanting them to an area with thinning or no hair (recipient site). This procedure is commonly used to treat male pattern baldness, but it can also be used to restore hair in women, and for other types of hair loss.

Here are the key steps involved in a typical hair transplant procedure:

Consultation and Evaluation:
  • Before the procedure, the patient consults with a hair transplant surgeon who evaluates the hair loss pattern, discusses expectations, and determines the suitability for a hair transplant.
Donor Area Preparation:
  • The surgeon identifies a donor area on the scalp with healthy hair follicles. This area is usually resistant to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is responsible for male pattern baldness.
Hair Follicle Harvesting:
  • Hair follicles are harvested from the donor area using one of two main methods:
    • Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): A strip of skin containing hair follicles is surgically removed from the donor area, and the wound is closed with stitches.
    • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): Individual hair follicles are extracted one by one using a small punch tool.
Recipient Site Creation:
  • Tiny incisions or holes are made in the recipient site where the hair will be transplanted. The surgeon takes care to create a natural-looking hairline and distribute the grafts evenly.
Graft Placement:
  • The harvested hair follicles are then carefully placed into the prepared recipient sites. The angle and direction of placement are crucial for a natural appearance.
Recovery:
  • After the procedure, the patient is provided with postoperative instructions. There may be some swelling, redness, or minor discomfort, which usually subsides in the days following the surgery.
Results:
  • Hair transplant results are not immediate. The transplanted hair may fall out within a few weeks, but new hair growth typically begins within a few months. Full results can take up to a year.
Follow-Up:
  • Patients have follow-up appointments to monitor the progress, address any concerns, and assess the success of the transplant.
Considerations:
  • Hair transplant success depends on factors such as the surgeon's skill, the patient's hair characteristics, and proper postoperative care.
  • Not everyone is a suitable candidate for a hair transplant, and alternatives should be considered.

It's crucial to consult with a qualified and experienced hair transplant surgeon to determine the best approach based on individual needs and expectations.
